Troubleshooting Tips for Prepaid SIM Card Issues

A prepaid SIM card is a cheap, contract-free way to stay connected in Korea, but every so often a new SIM just won’t come to life — no signal, no data, or an “invalid SIM” message. Most of the time it’s one of a handful of fixable causes, not a faulty card. Work through the checks below in order; for foreign-bought phones, the IMEI registration step is the one that catches people most often, so don’t skip it.

Quick checks first

1. Confirm your phone is unlocked. A handset still locked to your home carrier won’t accept a Korean SIM. If you’re not sure, ask your original carrier to confirm it’s unlocked (and to unlock it if it isn’t) before you rely on the new SIM.
2. Turn data on and rule out the obvious. Switch Wi-Fi off so the phone is forced onto mobile data, make sure cellular/mobile data is enabled, and check you’re not in airplane mode. Then power the phone fully off and on once or twice — a clean reboot is what registers the device on the Korean network, and it clears a surprising number of “no service” cases on its own.
3. Re-seat the SIM. Power down, take the SIM out, check it’s the right way round and sitting flush in the tray, and put it back. A SIM that’s slightly off in the tray reads as “no SIM.”

Foreign-bought phone? Register your IMEI

If the quick checks didn’t help and your phone was bought outside Korea, the most likely cause is that the device itself isn’t registered. Since early 2023, overseas-bought handsets have needed their IMEI on file before a prepaid SIM will fully activate. You register it yourself at imei.kr.

Still not working? Isolate the problem

1. Test the SIM in another phone. Pop your SIM into a different unlocked handset. If it works there, the SIM is fine and the issue is with your original phone — usually the lock status or IMEI registration above. If it doesn’t work in either phone, the SIM or the activation is the problem.
2. Contact your provider. If you’ve worked through everything above and you’re still offline, reach out to whoever sold you the SIM with your phone model and IMEI ready. Activation sometimes has to be completed or re-run from their side.

Step-by-step: registering your IMEI at imei.kr

This is the fix for most foreign-bought phones that show signal but won’t get data on a Korean prepaid SIM. You’ll need your passport details and your phone’s IMEI to hand.

1. Find your IMEI. Dial *#06# on the phone, or look under Settings → About phone / General. Note it before you remove the SIM, since you’ll want it during sign-up. If your phone is dual-SIM, write down both IMEI numbers (IMEI1 and IMEI2) — you may need to register each one.
2. Go to imei.kr. Open the site and start the device-registration flow. There’s an English option if Korean isn’t comfortable for you.
3. Enter your details. You’ll provide personal information (passport-based) and the IMEI number(s) from step 1. Double-check the digits — a single wrong digit means the wrong device gets registered and the SIM still won’t work.
4. Submit and wait for it to take effect. Once it’s accepted, reboot the phone so it re-registers on the network, then test data with Wi-Fi off. If it’s still dead after registering, the counter at the carrier or reseller can complete the activation manually.

One more thing worth knowing while you’re here: a prepaid SIM typically runs for up to 90 days. If you’re staying longer, an extension is usually possible once you hold an ARC — so if a working SIM suddenly stops weeks in, check whether it has simply reached the end of its term rather than assuming it’s a fault.
